(Alvra
Hocker) MUSTER
What is home? Perhaps it is that feeling that is inscribed in places, people and smells; in past memories that are continually blended with present experiences. This interplay between past and present becomes tangible in „Not Far From The Tree“ by Fabio Rutishauser. The object is made of Swiss wood, which grows near the house where he himself grew up. The tree takes on the role of the silent observer who was raised with Rutishauser, changing with him and time.
«Not Far From The Tree» can be used as furniture or, through its sculptural aesthetics, can be seen as an object in its own right. It is composed of three elements: While some surfaces remained unprocessed, others were sanded. Nevertheless, Fabio Rutishauser tried to intervene as little as possible so as not to alienate the wood from its original state. At this point a field of tension opens up: the object is simultaneously worked and unworked, raw and refined, making the process of its transformation visible. The closeness to origin and provenance becomes clear not least in the construction: the object is kept simple and can be traced back to its individual parts. Nevertheless, the elements are inseparable from each other – just as past and present are.
Context:
«Not Far From The Tree» emerged from the exhibition «Inspired by Switzerland», where twelve Swiss designers were tasked with creating projects influenced by local reference objects. These works were displayed alongside the Russian Design Awards 2021 at the All Russian Decorative Art Museum in Moscow.
The project was also featured as part of last year’s UKURANT group exhibition during the 3DaysOfDesign event in Copenhagen.
